Cortina d'Ampezzo (1,224 - 3,243 m above sea level) is a town of 8,000 inhabitants. Cortina's tradition as a ski resort dates back to long before World War II. It is one of the most famous resorts and it is no wonder that it is called the Queen of the Dolomites, because not only thanks to its ski slopes and cross-country trails, but also gastronomy, we owe every year to a steady influx of visitors, especially Italian cream from Turin and Milan.
It has a very good location in the middle of the beautiful dramatic Dolomites, in the province of Belluno and in the Veneto region. However, the Winter Olympics, which took place here in 1956, gave Cortina only the right shine. Cortina has above-standard sports equipment, so if you are not satisfied with just downhill or cross-country skiing, you can try jumping or bobsleighing. The downhill runs are of all difficulties. Almost two thirds of the slopes are more demanding.
One of the most famous slopes in Cortina is undoubtedly the descents from Tofana (3,243 m), where you can take the cable car via Col Druscie and Cristallo (3,216 m). Good skiers will certainly not forgive themselves to try the Olympic downhill run from Tofana. Medium difficult slopes can be found on the slopes of the peaks Tondi (2,362 m) and Faloria (2,123 m), which can be reached by cable car and chairlift. Beginners can ski on the gentle plains of Mount Pecol with a number of lifts. From Passo Falzarego (2,105 m) above Cortina, the cable car leads to the top of Lagazuoi (2,800 m). From here there is a 7.5 km long track with an elevation gain of 1,100 m to Armentarola. From Col Druscia to Rumerlo, crossings can be made less demanding.
If the visitor decides to visit the second part of the Cortina ski area, he can ski on the slopes in Misurina (1,756 m). There are not so many difficult slopes and you can spend a quiet holiday here. The Auronzo - Misurina ski area stretches to Monte Agudo. There is also the San Vito di Cadore ski area with its 16 km of slopes. Together, the whole area has 33% of blue, 62% red, 5% black on 140 km of slopes of varying difficulty.
Misurina is located on the lake of the same name, which is usually frozen in winter and therefore serves as an ice rink, there are also interesting cross-country trails nearby. From the car park, it is possible to take the chairlift to the Col de Varda up to 2,300 m and from there to climb the moderately demanding slopes back to Misurina. All Auronzo - Misurina - Cortina resorts can be reached with the Dolomiti Superski ski pass. Cross-country ski trails cross at Lago d´Antorno.
The ski area also has some climbing routes.
In addition to downhill skiing, you can go on snowshoe trips, or try a toboggan run more than 1 km long or just walk in the snow-covered pine forests. And after a hard day of skiing, you can skate here and try to ride on the Olympic ice from 1956 in one of the most beautiful stadiums, where the opening ceremony took place at the time. The rink has 30 x 60 m and is used not only by the public, but also for various concerts and hockey matches. Cortina is also known for its famous gastronomy. In summer, charming mountain lakes can be explored on foot or by bike.

Cortina is within reach. It is well connected to all the capitals of northern Italy, the train stations and the surrounding airports. Cortina is located in the province of Belluno, accessible by car on the A27 motorway (Venice - Belluno) and the A22 motorway (Modena - Verona - Bressanone - Innsbruck).
How to get to Cortina by car:
- from the A27 from Mestre to Pian di Vedoja (Belluno), then along the SS 51 di Alemagna and then according to the signs to San Vito di Cadore - Cortina.
- from the A22 from Brenner or from Modena take the exit for Bressanone, then the SS 49 to Dobbiaco / Toblach and from there take the SS 51 towards Cortina.
- from Lienz in Austria, drive the E66 to Dobbiaco / Toblach and from there take the SS 51 towards Cortina.
When you want to reach Cortina from the south, lie in the following directions:
Passo Tre Croci - Auronzo - Misurina
from the east: Toblach - Bolzano - Brenner
from the north: Falzarego, Pordoi pass
Parking spaces are located near the ski lift Donariè / Donariè Baita, at Baita Ciastel, Ski Bar Tambres / Tambres. A convenient ski bus connects all lifts of the San Vito ski area. The service is only available in winter.

There are trains from Innsbruck every hour from 11:00 to 20:00 and the journey (by train from Innsbruck is Fortezza and Dobbiaco + by bus from Dobbiaco) about 4 hours

In addition to the above-mentioned Cortina Express shuttle bus service, there are direct bus connections between Cortina and some northern Italian cities in high season. For example, there are regular buses to Venice with stops in Treviso and Mestre. The journey takes approximately 3.15 hours.
