Rome is the capital city of Italy and it is often called the 'Eternal city'. It is located in the area of Lazio. It is one of the oldest cities, founded more than 2 700 years ago. Rome was for hundreds of years the capital city of the Roman Empire and of the Catholic Church. There is the independent Vatican state in the centre of the city, the principal residence of the Pope, the head of the Catholic Church. The most significant buildings are the cathedral of Saint Peter or the Sistine Chapel. Rome was built on seven peaks in the hilly terrain of Campagna di Roma. The most important one is Kapitol on which a religous centre of the same name was built. Rome is a centre of institutions such as the Pope University, the National and Vatican libraries or Goethe institut. The Italian metropole is full of cultural, historical and architectural sights. One of the most important ones is Colosseum, which is the main and the biggest monument preserved from the age of the Roman Empire. The walls of Colosseum are already damaged, but the 4 floors with pillars are partially preserved. Another important monument is the Forum Romanum. It is the oldest part of Rome which was over centuries the heart and the centre of the entire Empire. One of the best preserved buildings from the Roman antique era is Pantheon in the centre of the city. On the right bank of the river Tibera is the Angel Castle, which was constructed under the emperor Hadrian as his mausoleum. Today there are collections of arms and jewellery. There is the Angel Bridge decorated by 10 statues of angels next to the castle. Other popular sight are the Spanish Stairs. Rome has also a sophisticated network of public water pipe lines and a system of fountains. The most famous fountains are certainly Fontana di Trevi, Fontana del Babuino, Barcaccia or Fontana della Botte.
