Massa Lubrense, nicknamed the "land of the Sirens", is a sunny and lively town on the Sorrento Peninsula. Washed by the waters of both the Gulf of Naples and the Gulf of Sorrento, Massa Lubrense is an area rich not only in history, myth and tradition, but also in great natural heritage.
According to legend, the shores of this town were home to mythical women of peace who tried to charm Odysseus on his return journey to Ithaca. In fact, the city was first a Greek colony and then a territory ruled by the ancient Romans, who built many summer homes here.
The name Massa Lubrense, however, has a very strange origin. "Massa" comes from the expression "Massa" after the short reign of the Longobards "mansa"which in the Longobard language meant "a place suitable for cultivation", whilemco "lubrense" means "temple", probably because of the presence of a church that stood on the beach at Fontanelle.
The town of Massa Lubrense, which consists of 18 villages. Among the first stops in the town is the small village of Marina della Lobra with a nice little harbour. Located about 2 km from Massa Centro. The Marina della Lobra harbour is very busy in summer and since 1973 it is also the seat of a nautical club. Right in front of the town's marina is a large rock known as Scoglio Vervece, which is a destination for diving and boat trips. Every September, a ceremony is held here to commemorate those who have died at sea, during which a wreath is laid on the underwater statue of the Madonna, which is at a depth of 11 metres.
Among the places of interest not to be missed is the Punta Campanella Marine Protected Area, where the baia di Ieranto, a truly beautiful bay on the coast that can only be reached on foot. If you want to spend a day by the sea, be equipped with everything you need, because no one will lend you sunbeds and umbrellas, but you will be able to swim in the clearest water on the coast. This is because you are in the middle of a protected area and access to any motor vehicles is forbidden. Just watch out for the jellyfish!
