Tremitian Islands

The Isole tremiti, or Diomede Islands, named after the Greek hero Diomede, who according to legend was buried here after his journey through the Adriatic Sea, are an archipelago in the Gargano National Park in Puglia. It consists of five islands and one rock: San Domino, San Nicola, Caprara, Cretaccio and Pianosa.

San Nicola and San Domino are the largest and the only inhabited ones; the other three are smaller and wilder, part of a marine reserve and can only be visited on foot or with a permit.

The Tremiti islands are easily reached by sea from the ports of Vieste, Rodi Garganico, Peschici and Termoli. The journey to San Domino Island takes about 60 minutes and tickets for the ferry and seaplane to Tremiti can be purchased online. The price varies depending on the port, sailing and season. For example, a day trip to the Tremiti Islands in the middle of summer will cost around 50 euros per person round trip.

If you choose to stay on San Domino, the largest of the archipelago, you will find a small village, an island covered in Mediterranean scrub with only one large beach - Cala delle Arene - and many small rocky coves.

Get off the ferry and head towards Punta del Diamante, the northernmost tip of the island, towards Cala Tamariello. In this sun-drenched cove, named for the presence of shrimp, in the Amarielli dialect, you can relax and have lunch at picnic tables in the shady pine forest.

If you have more time, there are other attractions to see on the Tremiti Islands, including:

A visit to the fortress and abbey of Santa Maria a Mare on the island of San Nicola
A boat trip along the coast, where you can admire all the islands of the archipelago from the sea.

snorkelling to get a close look at the marine flora and fauna of the Tremita
Diving to the sunken statue of Padre Pio
Exploring the chimneys and sea caves around the islands
